Typically a long and complicated process that involves extensive labor costs. Many transmissions on late model cars last until the vehicle goes to the junkyard. Others may fail after as little as 80,000 miles.
Typical costs:
Replacing a transmission can run $1,800-$3,500. Costs vary from one make and model to another, generally speaking, the more you paid for the car, the more you are likely to spend on replacing the transmission.
Prices also vary depending on prevailing labor costs. If workers tend to be paid less than average in your area, you may find lower prices.
What should be included:
Remove and replace transmission, which includes removing drive axles and/or drive shaft.
Limited warranty.
Discounts:
Some repair shops offer discounts for AAA members.
Shopping for replacing a transmission:
Find a reputable repair shop and proceed with caution when using bargain specials from unknown mechanics.
Find a mechanic before you need one. Do your research and locate a mechanic you trust before you actually need servicing, so you aren't stuck with the first mechanic you find during a time of need.
I am not getting any help from Honda. I have 2003 Odyssey that had recall on transmission. They want 95.00 to look at transmission that had been recalled. I don't understand how they can charge for something they were supposed to fix to begin with. I only have 71000k miles on it and no help from dealership. Is that how they treat customers how pay cash in full when driving car off the lot? My extended warrenty went till 01/10/2010 or 75000k miles. But seriously.... it was recalled and they should at least look into it without charging the customer.
the RPM of my corolla has been going past 5 on several instances when i do 60+ miles on the fwy. called my mechanic, he said my transmission may be slipping aolready. he took a look at it, and did a test drive and couldn't find anything wrong. it's $155k miles already, and its a 2003 corolla. i don't know how much to expect if i replace/rebuild this, and if i should consider getting a used / new car instead, as i was also told i will need to change all 4 tires and shocks soon.
Had a good Mechanic I have known for a lot of years. It seemed to have a very slight vibration at speeds above 45 that it didn't have before. Otherwise runs well. Just the same I plan to trade it when I get a chance.
I have Honda Accord 2001, and had just found out my transmission needs to be replaced for 2K, mechanic even suggested that I retire the car with the city for 1K. What's funny, is the transmission on my Honda was recalled, aparently I had a 7 yr warranty and the transmission was suppose to be replaced for FREE but I was not aware of it so now I am stuck with fixing All these problems(recalls) or retiring a beautiful car after 9 yrs of use! Very dismayed and disappointed, as I bought the car new for 25K
here is the itemized list for the rebuilt transmission. 1 new assembly set natpro#k58ooe-s $210.00 1 new filter-dacron $25.00 1 new band intermediate and overdrive $50.00 1 new band intermediate and overdrive $50.00 new transmission fluid to manufac spec $42.75 1 exchange rebuilt torque converter $347.00 1 new turbine sensor $20.00 1 new intermediate servo piston $25.00 1 new - overdrive servo piston $26.00 labor to rebuild $595.00 labor to remove and reinstall $510.00 1 online discount -$100.00
hmmm thats weird...i paid exactly 1868.24 and this is adding up to over 2k...anyways thats what the invoice has a breakdown of everything.

car was always dealer maintained, all of a sudden service eng, soon light comes on, dealer service manager tells me within an hour that my transmission is going to fail soon, car shifted fine, and no problems at high speed, had transmission oil changed at 79,000klm .I being a heavy eqwipment mechanic has a better knowledge of what to look for than the average Joe and i know that it should last more than 50,000 miles, (past experiance with other GM"s). This really leaves a sour taste in my mouth.
I have taken very good care of my Jeep but at 86,400 miles with absolutely no indication my transmission gave out. Who else has had this problem? Also, I am having a hard time finding out if this is normal for this type of vehicle.
I know I am getting totally ripped and there is nothing I can do because Goodyear credit card my only way to pay. I just can't understand why a company would want to rip a customer off so badly.
Man. Really the transmission was quoted at $1600 which is what I was what I was anticipated then come find out my transfer case(4 wheel drive power) needs to be replaced also. It hurts so bad.

My mechanica said he would replace my xmission for $675 partys $350 labor $1025 but only came with 3 month warranty. Brought it to a trasmission specialist. Was quoted $1600 for a 2yr 24k warranty, but could be more depending on how much hardware was dammaged. I got the call and it was $2080. Not sure if my car is still worth that but don't want car payments now
I received several quotes to rebuild my transmission from 1300 to 2500. Mr Transmission gave me a fair quote and stuck to it. Most shops will throw in extras and hit you at the end for more money. I paid the price I was quoted and got everything fixed that was needed, even a few extra things that they could have left alone. I also received a 3 yr 50,000 mile warranty.
I paid hollywood transmission 1200 cash to rebuild my transmission in May 2010, seemed like a good deal and it included a year warranty or 12000 miles. My car broke down in December 2010 when i towed it back to the shop the mechanic was to busy to check it and made a big deal about my warranty, 2 days later he called me saying that my radiator had blown and ruined my transmission and that wasn't covered by my warranty when i went to the shop he showed me a leaking car and a puddle of fluid under it he also told me he had to flush the radiator and that to fix it was gonna cost 1250 can someone please tell me if this is accurate or is this guy just blowing smoke because he doesn't want to honor his warranty!
No O.D. or Drive, drove it 2nd gear for several miles carried the truck to my regular mechanic and he scanned the transmission the next day. He said that it was dead and that I needed to replace it with a new GM transmission not a rebuilt or after market transmission.

after 4years the van wouldn't go into park! Del toyota in Coatesville took it to the the transmission specialist. Amazing damage to the transmission. metal sheared off full of shards of metal extensive damage. no way this is normal. Toyota but you have exceeded your warrenty of 60,000. Really Toyota you only want a transmission to last 107,000. Dealer is very surprised.

Vehicle was towed in and work was finished. Truck drove 18 miles before I had to have it towed back in with engine problems. Now motor needs to be rebuilt or replaced. Just spent 2869 and shop overcharged 869 resulting in a negative bank account and is giving runaround with refund. Truck was returned with a cut hose, and the manager of this shop is a fruit loop. Has a bad rep online and now I know why.
I had bought the car from an auction to find out that the transmission was shot. Two days after I bought the car the reverse went on the transmission. I then went to a salvage yard and purchased a used transmission for $200.00. I took it to the transmission shop and they charged me 400-500 dollars to install it. So you get what you pay for right?
Change trans after 2 years having problems,165K miles and at least 60K of those towing a race car, big 10KBTU oil Cooler. Total rebuilt, a little high, but good service, no more problems after that. 97 Ram known for weak trans.
REBUILT TRANSMISSION AT 119K. THE DAMN AUTO SHOP TOOK ABOUT 6 MOS TO TRY AND FIX, ACTUALLY I SHOULD SAY THAT ITS STILL NOT FIXED. CAR'S STILL SHIFTING HARD AND SLIPPING. CAN'T EVEN FIX IT WITH MY "SO-CALLED" WARRANTY CAUSE THE SHOP WENT BANKRUPT. I'M SHIT OUTTA LUCK WITH THAT...
This car had 220 thousand miles of going up and down the mountain when the tranny finally started to slip. As soon as I pulled in to the drive, it went. We had our mechanic look for the part which was fairly easy because it is such a popular car, and gave us a great deal. The camry is at 290 now with the transmission being the only problem.
I just want to say thanks to everyone for sharing this information. I have been considering buying a used VW Jetta. A number of them that are for sale describe transmission problems in the ad. Now that I've read the posts about VWs and how much it costs to fix them, I'll look for something else.
Starting to get slow shifting around 35 mph accompanied by a deep rattle. Car is 03 has 175K miles (first real problem on it). Dealer cost seems astronomical compared to local tranny shop estimates in the 1-1.5K range. Although warranty with dealer is 3 years (outside shops only 1 year).
I replace the transmission in my durango 18 months ago now something else is wrong with it, if i had to do it all over again i would not put the money in it.
I had the transmission replaced which carried a 1 year limited warranty on it. A year and a half later the transmission failed. I love the Ford Windstar style, roominess, and ride. The engine is great, 3.8L. the paint job stinks and the Ford company doesnt stand by it, Major fixes on this car, transmission, rack and pinion, steering pump. I paid $6,000 for this car 2 years ago and have put in over $4,000 in repairs. Now I am left with no car, on foot with two kids and recent budget cuts at work, so less work hours. An hour walk to work and then back to home is not going to seem so great here in a month when our weather turns here on the coast. Dont by a Ford Windstar. Nothing but problems.

When I bought my car the advertisement said it had warranty on the transmission. After two months it got a severe transmission fluid leak and became undriveable .The previouse owner had me transport the car to the garage where the work had been done .It's now been four weeks and have lost contact with the previouse owner .I am stuck with no vehicle .Don't know where to go from here.
1st transmission world quoted 2400 to rebuild transmission for 2004 ford explore. then they said they will charge me 1800 after i told them i would take it to someone else. they did the job for 1800. after that repair they said i need a new radiator because that was the problem that make the transmission go bad. i said no... give me the car i will take it to another mechanic for advise and they said radiator did not need repair. Now transmission world won't give me the warranty on the transmission because i did not let them replace the radiator for $495.00. How can I get them to give me the warranty on the job they did regardless to the fact that they did not replace the radiator?
I had my Transmission rebuilt and install for just one year warranty they got five hundred dollar for life time,But no three year warranty.I feel I gotten rail road.
