A muffler is a baffle-filled cylinder designed to reduce engine emissions and noise; car mufflers are typically located underneath and at the rear of the vehicle. All states have laws requiring functioning mufflers on all vehicles driven on public roads. Symptoms that a muffler may need to be repaired or replaced include a rattling noise when starting, accelerating or braking; loud booms or hisses; rust or soot covering the tailpipe; or drowsiness while driving.
Typical costs:
Minor muffler repairs (such as welding a loose but still functioning muffler back in place or fixing broken clamps) can cost $30-$500 or more, depending on the specific work done and local labor rates. CostHelper Readers report paying $40-$300 for muffler repairs, at an average cost of $138. Most report finding the best repair prices at small, local muffler shops.
Having a muffler professionally replaced can cost $75-$750 or more, depending on the type of vehicle (whether it's a car, SUV, pickup or van), and whether the replacement parts are made by the vehicle's manufacturer (typically more expensive) or are aftermarket parts produced by other companies. Costs also depend on who does the work; small local muffler shops are usually the least expensive and car dealership service departments generally charge the highest prices. CostHelper readers report paying $80-$647 for replacing a muffler, with an average charge of $280.
In some circumstances -- particularly if other parts like the exhaust pipes or catalytic converter also need replacing -- the total can be considerably higher, or as much as $1,000-$2,500 or more. CostHelper readers report receiving quotes of $1,400-$2,200 before finding less-expensive alternatives.
Quoted prices for muffler replacement should typically include the part, labor and any needed hoses or pipes. A muffler can come with either a limited or a lifetime warranty, but typically this only covers the muffler itself and not the attached pipes -- which usually wear out before the muffler.
In some cases, the muffler may be a "dealer item" only, meaning the repair shop will need to order the part from a dealership. While this may not necessarily impact the price, it could cause a delay of several days.
Additional costs:
A muffler can need replacing more than once in a vehicle's lifetime. Car experts Tom and Ray Magliozzi of the Car Talk[1] radio show say it's not unusual for an aftermarket replacement muffler to last about two years, especially in areas where it's exposed to rain, snow and salt.
Discounts:
Mufflers are typically covered under new vehicle warranties, and may be covered up to 50,000-60,000 miles or more, so if the car is relatively new, check before getting any work done.
Most do-it-yourselfers can do a few basic muffler repairs[2] , but muffler replacement requires stronger mechanical skills. A how-to video[3] demonstrates what is involved. An after-market muffler can cost $30-$200 or more, depending on the make and model of vehicle. A CostHelper reader in California reports paying $46 for a do-it-yourself muffler installation.
Shopping for a muffler:

Muffler replacement is not offered at all auto repair shops. Look for shops that offer "exhaust system" work.

Not sure of the entirety of this fix. It's being fixed as I type. I know my heat shield fell off and the muffler itself was blown out like an alien chest buster. I honestly thought it would be more $ because the noise started 2 years ago. I had to choose more important parts to fix First.
The flex pipe is the braided steel-covered exhaust pipe section that is just in back of the engine. The braiding covers a flex pipe, similar to a dryer vent configuration, only steel. Found the shop thru a Yelp search, hadn't been to a muffler shop in about 15 years. The entire procedure was removal of burned out flex pipe, about a 8" long part from end-to-end, installation and providing of new flex pipe, installation of 2 muffler hangers to support the flex pipe, which were not there, per the installer. The entire job was about 30 minutes. I didn't want to delay the work, because running with a large exhaust leak creates a lean condition, and can potentially damage an engine. Hence, I used the judgement of the Yelp reviews to make my decision, rather than get estimates, time was of the essence with regards to not damaging the engine. My engine was recently rebuilt. Still unsure if it was a good price.

They only replaced the mufflers. 430.00 plus 114.67 labor. WTH? The welds look like someone was trying to practice that had very little experience welding. I will never get anything done there life time warranty or not.
My 2002 Corolla's muffler fell off while I was driving. I lowered the back seats and was able to fit it in my car. I took it to Mogo auto shop in Westlake, and they fixed in about 2 hours for $140. If I could get safely under the car, I would have tried to fix it myself using a heat patch.
I went in for and estimated cost for my 2001 Ford the man put on rack showed me all the damage rust. Explain to me different options. Was so happy with them for walking me thru options. Stainless steel muffler and exhaust 180. Only took him 45 mins. Truck so quiet and smooth running. I was so happy and impressed.
My exhaust system broke in the middle of the underside of car while I was on a trip to the mountains. I lugged the whole muffler and about 5 feet of pipe home in the middle of the car hoping to have it just welded back on for maybe a hundred bucks. First place (a local full mechanic) said there was too much rust to weld anything back together and would need to replace everything from the catalytic converter back. They quoted $680, but admitted they were way overpriced since exhausts weren't their primary thing. They stated Exhaust Pros were the only place they could confidently recommended. Called Mike there & he quoted me $225 to replace everything. I showed up the next morning happy with the quote. I mentioned the old muffler was in my car if he could reuse any of it. He said it would be done by the afternoon. Two hours later he called and said it was finished for 80 bucks. He was able to fully reuse everything that had fallen off just replacing a 18" section of pipe. I'm very happy!
2000 Subaru Forester. Replaced everything behind catalytic converter with generic parts - resonator, mid pipe, rear pipe and muffler. Paid $180 cash and the job took 45 minutes.
Original muffler was still on there after 152K miles, which is pretty remarkable. Had to get the rear muffler assembly replaced. Spent $634 with parts and labor. Seems reasonable. I'm sure It could've been worse at a Dealership. Pricey but I think better than paying for a new car payment every month

Gaping hole in middle pipe (the one with resonator). My guy said connections for front and rear pipes were corroded. He said he worked to salvage the front pipe (w/ cat converter), but that rear pipe (w/ muffler) was close to going. So he replaced middle and rear pipes. Hard to second guess him, but I would have loved to get underneath myself and try to save the rear pipe! I could have gotten the middle pipe for $100, and if needed the rear pipe for about the same. Then again, exhaust systems can be nothing but frustration for a DIYer! How much is that worth? :)
Think I was yanked...they charged me for an exhaust system...
Flex pipe 59.99
Catalytic converter 179.99
Hangers 18
Weld 18
Labor 180.00 charged for three they were done in 1.5

Took it in for an inspection and a check engine light...told me it needed $3800. worth of repairs to pass! Wanted to charge me $2200.00 to replace the exhaust!!! Took it to a local garage and it passed with $800 worth of repairs. Didn't even need a whole exhaust replacement! Watch out people!
They raise it all up but cause a crack at the end of the catalytic converter. Easily fixed and Still did a great job on the muffler installation . Highly recommended to fix all your muffler needs
Service person was ultimately very helpful but really priced this repair way high, to include the catalytic converter ($900). I could not afford $1400, let alone $650 to replace the midpipe and muffler, so her offered a weld of the join for $125. Still more than I should have paid, but, at least I have the repair I need for now and can decide on what to do with potential issues down the road.
Replaced muffler on my Caravan. Owned it since new and this is the third muffler. Now, the "Plus a bit more" is about the catalytic converter. The internals have been rattling for a few years so I bought a CARB-compliant catalytic converter for $121 plus clamps and adapter pipes for another $18.26.
I was in and out within 45 minutes and the car is so smooth and quiet now. Total is $140 for muffler and gasket(???!!!) + $44 labor + $6 disposal + 13 tax. If I look at the market value of parts, it would be like $85. So adjust the labor to $100. That is an OK cost for the location, although I could have done it cheaper had I spent time shopping around. Meineke at Sawmill said I had to replace many more parts and gave me an estimate of $300. Don't go to those dishonest people.
Muffler was welded on since the pipe before the muffler was still in good condition. Quote to replace pipe (before muffler) once it rusted through was only $30.
Car One Rocks! I got a quote from Midas of $600 to replace the whole thing after convertor. Just too pricy! I got the pipe weld at Car One 3.5 years ago for $65. Now it's broken again and only cost $40 to fix it! Highly recommend this shop for mechanicals.
I needed everything except catalitic converter - well at 175,000 miles guess so, Muffler $138,(and pipes) $181 Resinator, gaskets and assessories comes to some $60, then one hour of labor $90.00, had to wait an hour for the parts to get there, was in shop 3 hours total.
I can't believe this is the second muffler in 55,000 miles. They tell me it is because I do not drive enough. OK ~ but $647.00 replacement...I don't think so !!!
Thought it was something major, but replaced OEM flex pipe with a custom one, including a custom made hanger. Completed in about 45 minutes including fitting and welding. This guy is amazing, should be good for another 10 years!
A liitle high. I was expecting $150 - $180. But i was also fairly desperate. Shop was in university place, near tacoma. It was a universal muffler. Done in an hour.
got aftermarket flowmaster 50 suv muffler installed, increaseed all pipe size behind muffler to 3.0, piping was bought from Bob's auto repair shop. and bought nice tip from him as well, every thing was wielded on .. ice guy, talks, shows u things, will go back
