A sunroof is a panel in a vehicle's roof that lets in light and/or air; they can be installed at the factory, by the dealer or added later as an aftermarket option.
Typical costs:
A factory-installed sunroof might be a standard feature on a new car or it can add $500-$2,000 or more to the purchase price, depending on the size and type of sunroof, and the make and model of vehicle. For example, the manufacturer's suggested retail price for the 2013 Volkswagen Jetta S[1] is $16,720 for the standard S trim or $17,845 with the addition of a powered tilt-and-slide sunroof (also called a moonroof).
Expect to pay about $300-$800 or more for professional installation of a pop-up sunroof (a manually-operated tilting glass panel that is typically removable), depending on local rates and the size of the sunroof, the materials used, and the make and model of vehicle. For example, Sunroofs Etc. in Plymouth, MN offers a Newport 20"x32" Pop-Up Sunroof[2] with a super-dark removable glass panel for $500, without installation.
It can cost $600-$1,100 or more for professional installation of a spoiler sunroof (a top-mounted glass panel that tilts and slides along the outside of the vehicle's roof), depending on the size, materials and vehicle. Ameristar Auto Outfitters[3] in Detroit, MI charges $750-$800 for an electric spoiler sunroof with dark-tinted glass, a sliding sunshade and a pop-up wind deflector, without installation.
It typically costs $1,000-$2,000 or more for a moonroof, which is a type of sunroof with a power-operated internal sliding glass panel (the panel slides inside the car, between the metal roof and the interior headliner); the moonroof is the most common type of sunroof on new cars today. Sunroofs Etc.[4] in Plymouth, MN charges $1,050 to install a standard power moonroof; $1,196 to install a "sport" power moonroof in a two-door coupe; or $1,190 for a large power moonroof for a full-size truck or SUV, without installation.
A panoramic sunroof (a multi-panel, large roof system typically with both fixed and operable panels that may be transparent or opaque) is typically factory-installed, and can be a standard feature or an option that adds $1,000-$2,500 or more to the purchase price. For example, a panoramic sunroof (a front moonroof and a glass roof panel) comes standard on the 2013 Scion tC[5] (starting at $19,480).
Materials have a significant impact on cost. Less-expensive sunroofs use a dot matrix, screened glass that reflects back about 50% of the sun's heat, and more-expensive models use a reflective glass that is similar to a one-way mirror. Plastic or aluminum handles and hardware are less expensive but also less durable than steel or carbon fiber. And seals and gaskets made of neoprene cost less but may deteriorate rapidly when exposed to weather, while parts made of more-expensive silicone last longer.
Installing a sunroof requires an understanding of the roof structure of the vehicle, and is typically done by professionals. CycleVan of South River, NJ has a video demonstration of installing a pop-up sunroof on a Nissan Xterra[6] .
Additional costs:
For some new vehicles, the factory-installed sunroof may only be available as part of a high-priced package that includes other options. For the 2013 Prius v Five[7] , a panoramic-view moonroof with power sliding sunshades only comes as part of an Advanced Technology Package that costs $5,580 and also includes a navigation system, radar cruise control, a parking guidance system and more.
After many years exposed to all types of weather, a sunroof can start to leak, the tracks it slides in can be bent or damaged, or the motor may freeze up. Repairs can cost $100-$200 for do-it-yourself parts or $300-$1,000 or more at an auto repair shop or a car dealership, depending on the work needed.
Shopping for a sunroof:
A sunroof can be installed by a car dealership, an auto glass store or a shop specializing in sunroofs and other automotive accessories. The National Glass Association has a searchable directory of auto glass businesses[8] .
Major sunroof manufacturers include Donmar[9] , Inalfa Roof Systems[10] and Webasto[11] (including Hollandia, SFC and Solaire).

I got my Tiguan as a trade in on my diesel VW Jetta. One of the few times I had purchased an extended warranty. My panoramic sunroof was "eaten" by the mechanic/motor. The VW Service was gonna give me a hard time: did the sunshade wrap around the motor (not covered) or did the motor eat the sunshade (covered). $189 for the diagnostic, etc. ka-ching, ka-ching. And VW service was questioning if my warranty was still applicable Service interpret 60,000 miles as being the total mileage on the odometer, where per my warranty it was the purchase odometer miles PLUS 60,000. Always call the warranty folks directly to have it explained to you. NEVER go on being told by a service person. Never underestimate a gal with her documents organized either.
I need someone to give me an estimate. I just bought this car and the lady had the sunroof put in. She had a new headliner put in and she said they told her that who ever put the moon roof in did a terrible job. The lady told me that she had never open it after the liner was installed. I was curious and wanted to open it The glass lifted up on the button it has Vent so the Vent did open it just raised up. Is the glass supposed to slide all the way back. The button has vent open and closed. How much would it cost me to have someone see why the the glass want go all the way back and just the vent works.
Glass only. No sign of impact. On the freeway at 65MPH and it just exploded. I'll probably take the cost to warranty arbitration. Will file report with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
