Replacing a Passenger or Driver Side Window Cost

How Much Does a Replacing a Passenger or Driver Side Window Cost?

 average costMedium: Typically $180-$400

Driver and passenger windows are sometimes broken during accidents or burglary attempts. Although the windows are made of tempered glass, which helps hold the window in place and reduces the risk of small, sharp pieces, a broken side window is still hazardous and should be replaced as soon as possible.

Typical costs:

  • Replacing the glass for a standard passenger or driver side car window costs $100-$350, depending on the model of vehicle. Windows for rare or exotic vehicles can cost more. Users report paying $70-180 to replace a standard side car window.
  • Replacing a small, triangular side window (also called a quarter glass window or, if it moves, a vent glass window) can cost $100-$500 or more, depending on the year, make and model of vehicle, as well as the difficulty of installation. Because these windows are not common, they can be more expensive than standard-size door windows on the same vehicle.
  • A front car windshield typically costs $30-$150 to repair a chip or crack, and $180-$400 for a replacement, although it can cost $500-$1,500 for a rare or factory windshield. The article on How Much Does Replacing or Repairing a Windshield Cost provides details.

What should be included:
  • Replacing a side car door window typically involves opening up the door to access the window hardware. Replacing a side window should include removing the old window, installing the new one, and vacuuming and cleaning any glass shards that may have fallen into the car.
  • When handling the glass the installer should wear gloves for safety, but also because with a windshield, grease from the installer's hands can prevent the adhesives from bonding correctly. Car and Driver magazine has a video demonstrating car window replacement[1] .
Additional costs:
  • Sometimes when the old window has been shattered, pieces of glass can fall into the door and require power window repair.
Discounts:
  • Comprehensive auto insurance often covers glass replacement, either with a $100-$300 deductible or with no deductible amount due, according to the Insurance Information Institute[2] .
  • Some auto glass shops periodically offer discount coupons for $5-$25 or 5%-10% off.
  • Popular Mechanics explains do-it-yourself car window replacement[3] , noting that for a 2001 Ford F-150 pickup, replacement glass cost $18 from a junk yard instead of $160 from a retailer.
Shopping for a replacing a passenger or driver side window:
  • Repairs can be done at local repair shops that specialize in replacing auto windows, or by mobile car window services that can replace a car window at a home or workplace. Depending on local conditions, the work can often be done the same day, and many shops can give prompt estimates by phone or on their websites.

Was watching a movie and some thieves smashed my car driver side window even though nothing was visible in the cat. The next morning, I started contacting places and got 3 quick quotes for $177-$185 to fix it that day. Later on, a place offered a quote of $130 but it was too late so looking here, it looks like I overpaid a little
