A dump trailer is a box trailer with a hydraulic pump or air spring that lifts one end of the trailer bed at an angle to dump loose debris, dirt, gravel, fertilizer, peat moss, etc. Often the sides of the trailer bed are relatively low (1.5'-2') but can be 3'-5' or taller. Dump trailers can take the place of a dump truck, Dumpster and flat bed trailer.

Typical costs:

  • Renting a dump trailer can cost $60-$150 a day, depending on location, size and weight capacity. There may be a security deposit of $500-$600 or full payment will be due when picking up the equipment. For example, Robinsons Hardware[1] in Massachusetts rents a 9,990-lb, tandem axel, 6'x12'x27" dump trailer for $90 a day plus tax and fees, with full payment due at pick-up. TP Trailers in Pennsylvania rents a low-sided 6'x12' dump trailer for $90 a day ($145 daily with tax and fees) with a $600 deposit.
  • Single-axle trailers are less expensive, have a tight turning radius and are easy to maneuver by hand, but are less stable when towed and hard to control if a tire goes flat. Dual (tandem) axle trailers typically cost more but can pull heavier weights, tow more smoothly (less sway), have better traction on uneven surfaces and are easier to control with a flat tire. Dump trailers for residential or small business usage are typically 5'x8' to 7'x16', but can be larger for heavier agricultural, industrial or commercial use.
  • Expect to pay $3,000-$5,000 for a small (5'x8' to 6'x10'), single-axle dump trailer, depending on the power of the hydraulic lift and total weight capacity. For example, the single-axle, 3,000 pound, 5'x8'x25" Bri-Mar Rascal costs $2,900. Single-axle dump trailers are best for relatively light loads, like brush or lawn mulch.
  • Larger and more rugged dump trailers cost $5,000-$15,000, depending on size, number of axles, type of hydraulic lift, weight capacity and whether it's a standard bumper pull or gooseneck hitch (which extends forward and connects to a ball installed in the bed of a pickup truck) . The bumper-pull, tandem-axle, 9,900 lb., 6.5'x12'x18" PJ 78" Medium Duty Dump Trailer[2] sells for $6,000-$6,500; and the gooseneck, tandem-axle, 14,000 lb., 14'x83"x24"Big Tex 14LX14[3] sells for $7,000-$8,500. Double-axle trailers can handle heavier loads, like stone, concrete or dense debris.
  • New trailers typically depreciate 15%-20% when they leave the dealer's lot and roughly 10% each additional year, according to traileroutlet.com.

What should be included:
  • Many new dump trailer packages include brakes, legally required lighting, an electric breakaway kit, safety chains and D-rings for tying things down. Some also include slide-in ramps for loading equipment. A trailer dealer post a video[4] showing how a dump trailer works.
  • HitchInfo.com explains how to calculate total towing capacity[5] .
  • In most states, trailers with a gross vehicle weight rating of 1,500 or more must have brakes on all wheels. These can be surge brakes (illegal in some states), which are activated after the tow vehicle's brakes have slowed the trailer, or electric brakes connected to the tow vehicle's brakes. The American Boating Association charts towing laws by state[6] .
  • The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration lists safety tips[7] .
Additional costs:
  • Extended side view mirrors may be required starting at $4-$50 a pair for models that clamp onto the existing side mirrors or $150-$450 for permanently installed towing mirrors.
  • Installing a standard ball trailer hitch on a tow vehicle can cost $200-$500 or more; installing a gooseneck hitch can cost $400-$800 or more. A spare tire typically costs $20-$200 or more, and a bolt-on spare tire carrier adds $15-$100 or more.
  • An electronic trailer brake controller typically costs $40-$200 from auto parts stores, trailer dealers or online retailers like Amazon[8] . Installation and wiring can add $100-$200 or more.
  • A breakaway system to stop a towed trailer or vehicle if it gets loose typically includes a battery, switch and wiring and costs $10-$40 from trailer or boat dealers, or online retailers like Amazon[9] .
  • Towing a loaded dump trailer can reduce the tow vehicle's fuel efficiency by a few miles per gallon or as much as half (or more).
Discounts:
  • Trailerplans.com sells dump trailer plans[10] for $35 and kits[11] for $700-$3,300. Building a dump trailer requires strong DIY skills, often including welding; it can be a weekend project using a kit or take several months building from scratch.
Shopping for a dump trailer:
  • Prices for a new trailer are typically negotiable. The Journal of Light Construction provides a guide to buying a dump trailer.
  • Dump trailers are also sold on eBay[12] and by online retailers like Amazon[13] .
  • Rentals are typically available from trailer dealers and from construction rental companies like Hertz Equipment Rental[14] and United Rentals.
